Citizen Artists and Art Therapists: Social Action and Social Justice with Dr Jordan Potash

In recent years, much of the world - has been confronted with challenges to peace-building and democracy. Despite scholarship on the intersections of governance, psychotherapy, and art, there has been little discussion on the role that art therapists can play in supporting open societies. In this presentation, participants will examine how they can position their clinical and community work in a manner that champions social justice, open dialogues, critical perspectives, and citizenship. In particular art therapy can support social justice by facilitating opportunities for visualizing injustices, representing voices, bringing people together, and imagining solutions.

Jordan S. Potash, PhD, ATR-BC, REAT, LPCAT is Associate Professor, Art Therapy at The George Washington University and Honorary Associate Professor, Masters of Expressive Arts Therapy at The University of Hong Kong. As an art therapist for over 20 years, he has worked with clients of all ages in many settings including schools, clinics, and community art studios. He is also Editor in Chief of Art Therapy: Journal of the American Art Therapy Association. Jordan applies art and art therapy in the service of community development, cross-cultural relationships, and social change. For more information about Jordan or to view his art portfolio, go to
