Assistant Professor Sheila Lorenzo de la Pena (PennWest University, USA) will introduce the concept of el duende, where a piece is worked on with a focus on process versus product for a determined amount of time – a month, 2 months, a semester. The process is documented through photos and discussed throughout between supervisor and supervisee. As supervisor and supervisee struggle through the layers and successive visits to the piece, insights begin to emerge. Having practised el duende for 3 years, Sheila still continues to learn something new. Supervisees usually have no experience with this method and tend to see more pointed struggles, changes and adaptations (in themselves). Nurturing and helping solidify the connection to/with our creative practice makes us stronger clinicians. As the creative practice deepens and matures, so does how we present that to those we work with.

Assistant Professor Sheila Lorenzo de la Pena is a board-certified art therapy supervisor (ATR-BC, ATCS) in the United States and a full-time faculty in the graduate art therapy program at PennWest University, Pennsylvania. She oversees community and virtual studios offered through the program. Sheila is also an associate editor for the Journal of the American Art Therapy Association, serves on the Accreditation Council for Art Therapy Education (ACATE) board, and serves as events co-chair of the Pennsylvania Art Therapy Association (PATA). View her work on Instagram.

Cancellation Policy
When you register and pay to attend one of our events, you are holding a space on our calendar that is no longer available to other members. In order to be respectful of your fellow members and the presenter, please email Michelle as soon as you know you will not be able to attend the event. We keep our events as affordable as possible and need to pay presenters the fee they request. While we understand sometimes urgent matters come up, if registrants cancel at the last minute, we struggle to pay presenters. A full refund will be given if the cancellation occurs more than 24 hours before the event. If the cancellation occurs less than 24 hours before the event, 50% of your registration fee will be refunded only to defray our costs.

IMPORTANT: Due to limited places for events, unpaid invoices will expire within 15 minutes of registering. Please ensure you continue through to the payment screen or pay within 15 minutes to avoid your registration being cancelled. If you have any issue with payment you click the messages popup window in the bottom right corner of the screen, select “Balance due” and “Pay online” on the following screen.
